Terms of Use for AMA Manual of Style Online

By accessing the “AMA Manual of Style Online,” you agree to comply with and be bound by this legal notice (the “Terms of Use”). Definitions
  • Subscriber: a user, whether individual or institutional, who has a paid-up subscription to the AMA Manual of Style Online.
  • Free Trial User: a user who has been granted free, limited, and temporary access to the AMA Manual of Style Online.
  • AMA: The American Medical Association, the copyright owner of the AMA Manual of Style Online.
  • JAMA and the Archives Journals: the author of the AMA Manual of Style Online.
  • OUP, Inc.: Oxford University Press, Inc., the publisher of the AMA Manual of Style Online.
  • OUP UK: OUP, Inc’s UK affiliate Oxford University Press.
  • OPL: Oxford Publishing Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of OUP UK.

License Grant. Subscribers and Free Trial Users are granted a revocable, limited, non-exclusive and non-transferable license to access and use the AMA Manual of Style Online subject to their continued acceptance of and compliance with the terms described in the Terms of Use for personal, noncommercial use and for no other purposes than those specified herein. OUP, Inc. and the AMA reserve the right to restrict, suspend, or revoke any Subscriber or Free Trial User’s access to the AMA Manual of Style Online for any violation of the Terms of Use.
Permitted Uses
Under the license, Subscribers and Free Trial Users are permitted to:
  • search, view, retrieve, and display portions of AMA Manual of Style Online;
  • electronically save portions of AMA Manual of Style Online for personal use, but the total amount of portions saved shall not exceed 5% of the entire content of the AMA Manual of Style Online;
  • print out single copies of entries from the AMA Manual of Style Online. but such printing shall not exceed 5% of the entire content of the AMA Manual of Style Online.
  • Additional permission for classroom use of the AMA Manual of Style Online, including but not limited to permission to print and distribute quizzes and other materials, may be granted free of charge. Written requests for such permissions should be directed to: stylemanual@jama-archives.org.
Prohibited Uses
Any use not expressly designated as a permitted use above is considered a prohibited use absent express prior written consent from OUP, Inc. or the AMA. The following is a non-exhaustive list of prohibited uses. Under the license Subscribers and Free Trial Users are not permitted to:
  • display, distribute, sell, sublicense, or create derivative works based upon the AMA Manual of Style Online in either print or electronic format;
  • systematically make printed or electronic copies that incorporate more than 5% of the entire content of the AMA Manual of Style Online for any purpose in either print or electronic format;
  • remove or alter the copyright notices or other means of identification or disclaimers as they appear in AMA Manual of Style Online;
  • permit anyone other than the Free Trial User or Subscriber to access or use AMA Manual of Style Online;
  • use all or any part of AMA Manual of Style Online for any commercial use;
  • implement or transmit any program including but not limited to viruses, Trojan horses, or any other malicious software whose purpose is to hinder the functioning of the AMA Manual of Style Online, interfere with Subscriber’s and Free Trial User’s use and enjoyment of the AMA Manual of Style Online, or collect any data regarding Subscribers and/or Free Trial Users.
Copyright and Trademarks
The content of the AMA Manual of Style Online, including without limitation, the text, scripts, graphics, and any other interactive features, as well as the trademarks, service marks, and logos, are either owned by the AMA and licensed to OUP, Inc. or, in the case of any Oxford trademarks, service marks or logos on the site, owned by OUP, Inc. The materials on this Web site may be retrieved and downloaded solely for personal use. No materials may otherwise be copied, modified, published, broadcast, or otherwise distributed without the prior written permission of the AMA or OUP, Inc.

What information do we collect from Subscribers and Free Trial Users?
When you register for a free trial, ask for further information about AMA Manual of Style Online, or subscribe to the service, we ask for your name (or institutional name for institutional subscribers), e-mail address, postal address, and other relevant personal information; we also note start and end dates for Subscribers’ and Free Trial Users’ subscriptions (“Registration Information”). Registration Information submitted in this way is added to our access control database, hosted by a third-party hosting company, and to customer databases at OUP UK and OUP, Inc. premises. This information will be updated if you inform us of any changes.

How do we use Subscriber and Free Trial User Registration Information?
We do not sell your Registration Information, or any other information submitted to us to others. OUP, Inc. periodically provides JAMA and the Archives Journals with data regarding Subscribers and Free Trial Users from the Registration Information for use in internal JAMA and Archives Journals reviews. The Registration Information will not be shared with parties other than the AMA or JAMA and the Archives Journals.

Unless a Subscriber or Free Trial User opts out of such use, OUP, Inc. may also use the Registration Information in our customer databases to send you information about us and our products that we think may be of interest to you, both electronically and otherwise.

Unless you have informed us that you do not wish to receive further information about our products by opting out of such use, we may send you direct mail.

In addition to opting out of receiving information about OUP products, you may notify us either in writing or by telephone, fax, or e-mail that you object to being contacted in a particular stated way. Any e-mail messages sent to users who have not opted out will contain an e-mail address and/or Web site link in the event that these users would like to opt out. If you use more than 1 e-mail address to communicate with us, please notify us of each e-mail account that you use.

If you have registered for a free trial, asked for information, or subscribed to AMA Manual of Style Online in the past and no longer use the service and do not wish us to store information about you, please contact us and we will remove your details from our customer database. We need to store information about current Subscribers and Free Trial Users in order to fulfill our contractual requirements to you and in order to deliver AMA Manual of Style Online to you.

What information do we collect from queries regarding subscription management, technical problems, or general comments regarding the AMA Manual of Style Online?

We request personal information (such as your name, e-mail address, and other contact details) from you when you contact us with subscription management queries, technical problems, to comment on AMA Manual of Style Online, or when you ask for information about how to use the service. All personal information submitted by you and entered by Oxford University Press, Inc. into the AMA Manual of Style Online access control system is encoded using 128-bit SSL encryption before being sent over the Internet.
