Author Contributions

Editors may ask authors to describe what each author contributed, and these contributions to the work may be published at the editor’s discretion. (See also 5.1.1, Legal and Ethical Considerations, Authorship Responsibility, Authorship: Definition, Criteria, Contributions, and Requirements.) An example from the Archives of Dermatology is shown below:

Author Contributions: Study concept and design: Fortes, Melchi, and Abeni. Analysis and interpretation of data: Fortes, Mastroeni, and Leffondré. Drafting of the manuscript: Fortes. Critical revision of the manuscript for important intellectual content: Mastroeni, Leffondré, Sampogna, Melchi, Mazzotti, Pasquini, and Abeni. Statistical analysis: Fortes and Mastoeni. Obtained funding: Pasquini and Abeni. Study supervision: Fortes, Melchi, and Abeni.

JAMA and some of the Archives Journals require authors of manuscripts reporting original research and meta-analyses to provide an access to data statement (see 5.1.1, Legal and Ethical Considerations, Authorship Responsibility, Authorship: Definition, Criteria, Contributions, and Requirements). If such a statement is provided, it is given under the sidehead “Author Contributions,” before the other contributions.

Author Contributions: Dr Stolzenberg-Solomon had full access to all of the data in the study and takes responsibility for the integrity of the data and the accuracy of the data analysis.

Some journals require that at least 1 author serve as “guarantor,” taking “responsibility for the integrity of the work as a whole, from inception to published article, and publish that information.”2

Author Contributions: Yoon Kong Loke developed the original idea and the protocol, abstracted and analyzed data, wrote the manuscript, and is guarantor. Deirdre Price and Sheena Derry contributed to the development of the protocol, abstracted data, and prepared the manuscript. Jeffrey K. Aronson developed the protocol and helped with the manuscript.
